Resist was created specifically in response to the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V Wade. However, with the murder of Mahsa Amini by Iran’s Morality Police, and the subsequent riots across the Middle East, Resist reflects a broader call to arms to reject regressive politics in the modern world. Making use of a contemporary cultural phenomenon, Wordle, the piece compels a new generation to do more than voice their protest online. Women’s rights are civil rights and protest must be on the streets. To that end, Resist was initially created as a piece of street art, and placed around Melbourne. You can see its creation and installation here. Reflecting the nature of the subject, its paper version seen here has a distressed paint finish as opposed to most of my other paintings which tend to have clean block colours.
There will only ever be five original sprays of this six-layer stencil painting. This striking signed and numbered painting is hand-cut and hand-sprayed on gorgeous archival quality, acid-free, 300gsm paper. As such, each piece is unique, with its own individual (im)perfections. The medium grained textured paper is measures 50cm x 70cm. It is sold unframed and is shipped rolled in a tube with full insurance and tracking.
